Just 50 minutes away from the city of Kalamata is located the most important jewel of south Greece.

The Gulf of Navarino and Palaiokastro (Old Navarino Castle) are both exceptionally beautiful and historically significant sites in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and tranquil waters.

The gulf offers breathtaking panoramic views of crystal-clear blue waters against a backdrop of lush green hills dotted with olive groves and pine forests. The contrast between the deep blue sea and the verdant landscape creates a picturesque setting.
Along the shores of the gulf, there are several sandy beaches that are ideal for relaxation and swimming. The beaches often have calm waters, making them suitable for families and sunbathers.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Gulf of Navarino holds historical significance due to the Battle of Navarino, a pivotal naval battle that played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence. The bay’s history adds depth to its allure.
The gulf offers spectacular sunset views over the Ionian Sea. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, casting vibrant colors across the sky and water, is a memorable experience.

Palaiokastro, also known as Old Navarino Castle or Paliokastro, is a medieval fortress located on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Navarino and the town of Pylos.
The castle’s ruins showcase medieval architecture, including remnants of walls, towers, and other structures. The site offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and strategic importance.
From Palaiokastro, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Gulf of Navarino, Pylos, and the surrounding coastline. The elevated vantage point provides stunning photo opportunities.

Getting to Palaiokastro involves a scenic hike up a hill, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. The journey to the castle is part of the experience, offering glimpses of the natural beauty of the area.
Exploring Palaiokastro allows visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of the region. Interpretative signs provide information about the castle's history and significance.
Combining the beauty of the Gulf of Navarino with the historical charm of Paleokastro creates a captivating experience for visitors to the Peloponnese. Whether you’re interested in nature, history, or simply enjoying the views, both these sites offer unique and unforgettable experiences in Greece.

What are we doing there? We arrive with the vans at the end of the road. The area there is called Divari beach. This is exactly where the hike starts. The path is easy to medium difficulty, it goes around Paleokastro and on the way we meet, the lagoon of Gialova, of enormous importance for the entire Peloponnese region, the legendary cave of King Nestor, the breathtaking top of the castle with its incredible view where we also have the great break us in order to present you the area from a panoramic view but at the same time to take you back in time and explain why this particular point is from a geopolitical point of view perhaps the most important part in the modern history of Greece. After this very productive break we will continue on another path for the return where we will end up at the beautiful beach of Divari for a dip in the sea and prepare for the local restaurant.

Tour Location

Just 50 minutes away from the city of Kalamata is located the most important jewel of south Greece. The gulf of Navarino.

Historical Background

During the Greek Wars of Independence the gulf of Navarino became the theater of the biggest naval battle that ever took place in Mediterranean. On the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsulaat 1827, allied forces from Britain, France and Russia decisively defeated Ottoman and Egyptian forces trying to suppress the Greek war of independence, thereby making much more likely the independence of Greece. Sideways of the gulf at the top of the hill is standing the old Navarino castle. Is a 13th century Frankish fortress that is totally abandoned and destroyed after all these wars with a spectacular view from its top though.
