The Gulf of Navarino
Just 50 minutes away from the city of Kalamata is located the most important jewel of south Greece. The gulf of Navarino, one of the most impressive bays in Greece.
Our tour starts at the sand-dunes, just beneath the old Navarino Castle hill. On our way to the top, we will meet Gialova lagoon, the southernmost station where migratory birds stopover in the spring and fall. There are a number of sparsely inhabited locations which host significant populations of herons, kestrels, aegean seagulls, flamingos, ospreys, royal eagles and other migratory and endemic birds. Prominent among them is the African Chameleon, which is threatened by extinction.
Next stop is Palaiokastro, a medieval castle and an ancient acropolis, on top of the steep cliff overlooking the iconic horseshoe-shaped Gialova lagoon, Sfaktiria island and Pylos.
The path extends downwards the Divari beach, with several observation points along the way. You can swim and take the opportunity to explore the beach.
The tour ends with a traditional greek dinner, according to your needs.

Just 50 minutes away from the city of Kalamata is located the most important jewel of south Greece. The gulf of Navarino.
Historical Background
During the Greek Wars of Independence the gulf of Navarino became the theater of the biggest naval battle that ever took place in Mediterranean. On the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsulaat 1827, allied forces from Britain, France and Russia decisively defeated Ottoman and Egyptian forces trying to suppress the Greek war of independence, thereby making much more likely the independence of Greece. Sideways of the gulf at the top of the hill is standing the old Navarino castle. Is a 13th century Frankish fortress that is totally abandoned and destroyed after all these wars with a spectacular view from its top though.- Professional Tour Leader
