Ancient Messene
The most significant archaeological site in the Messinia region is undoubtedly ancient Messini. It is located just 30 minutes away from Kalamata. This is one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in Greece, which to this day manages to maintain the prestige of yesteryear, leaving its visitors impressed.
The ancient city that was built in 369 B.C. by the Thibean general Epaminondas. The city was created using the Ippodamic urban system according to which all buildings have the same orientation. It has not only sanctuaries and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications and residences and funerary monuments. It has, among other things, the rare privilege of not being destroyed or covered by younger settlements and being in a predominantly Mediterranean unspoiled natural environment.
The most significant monuments of this archaeological site that have been discovered are the Theater, the Stadium, the Gymnasium, the Mausoleum, the Agora, the Asclepius and the fountain of Arsinoe.
Excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including inscriptions, sculptures, and everyday items that provide insight into the daily life, culture, and governance of the city.
